Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann elected International Fellow of UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering

Ghana’s renowned biomedical engineer and academic, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, has been elected as an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), UK, joining some of the world’s most distinguished figures in engineering and technology.

The election was confirmed at the Academy’s Annual General Meeting, which announced 74 new Fellows, including 60 Fellows, nine International Fellows, and five Honorary Fellows drawn from diverse fields such as energy, defence, materials science, and biomedical engineering.

Each honouree was recognised for their groundbreaking innovations and commitment to promoting public understanding of engineering.

Prof. Kaufmann currently serves as Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana and is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, as well as a professional engineer.

Beyond academia, she is a household name as the long-time quiz mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), inspiring young Ghanaians in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Reacting to her selection, Prof. Kaufmann described it as an honour to be recognised.

The RAEng noted that the Fellowship embodies the Academy’s vision of harnessing world-class expertise to “engineer better lives.”

Prof. Kaufmann’s inclusion affirms her status as one of Africa’s foremost voices in engineering innovation and education.
