Ghana signs bilateral agreements with Norway, Venezuela to boost security and trade

Ghana has signed new bilateral agreements with Norway and Venezuela on the sidelines of a high-level United Nations meeting in New York, aimed at strengthening the economy, enhancing maritime security, and expanding international partnerships.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa led Ghana’s delegation and represented the country during the signing ceremonies.

Adom News’ journalist Ohene Amponsah reported from New York that the agreements are intended to boost the nation’s economy, enhance maritime security, and provide vital support to the fishing sector.

The agreement with Norway focuses on maritime security and logistics, with particular emphasis on protecting Ghana’s fishing industry from the growing threat of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Norway’s Minister for International Development, Åsmund Grøver Aukrust, signed on behalf of his country.

The deal will introduce modern technologies and build local capacity to safeguard fish stocks, ensuring the sustainability of Ghana’s coastal communities.

“Norway remains a very strategic partner, and we are relying on our relations to advance these fantastic bilateral ties. We have discussed how we can improve security, intelligence sharing, and address threats from the Sahel. Norway is working within the larger EU community,” Mr. Ablakwa said after the signing.

He also recalled Norway’s recent $50 million support in military hardware and equipment to strengthen Ghana’s defence and national security.

In addition, Ghana entered into a separate bilateral arrangement with Venezuela. While details of the deal are yet to be announced, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it forms part of Ghana’s broader diplomatic push to diversify economic and political cooperation.

Insiders suggest the Venezuela partnership could focus on energy or trade, reflecting both nations’ strategic positions in their regions.

The agreements highlight Ghana’s proactive approach to global diplomacy, using international collaborations to tackle domestic challenges and secure long-term benefits for its citizens.
