Legacy Crop Improvement Centre wins a prestigious climate award in India

Legacy Crop Improvement Centre (LCIC), a Ghanaian seed innovation company, has won the 2025 Global Award for Climate Resilience Champion, placing Ghana on the global map for sustainable farming solutions.

The award was presented at a ceremony in Hyderabad, India, by Dr. Diallo Yacouba, Secretary General of the African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA).

Founded by plant breeder Dr. Amos Rutherford Azinu, LCIC was recognised for its pioneering work in developing climate-resilient seed varieties that help farmers withstand unpredictable weather patterns across sub-Saharan Africa.

“This recognition highlights LCIC’s outstanding commitment to advancing climate-resilient agricultural solutions and reinforces our position as a leader in sustainable crop improvement in Ghana,” Dr. Azinu said.

Ghana, like many West African nations, faces increasing agricultural disruptions from prolonged droughts and invasive pests, threatening the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. LCIC has responded with innovative solutions such as drought-tolerant maize, early-maturing cowpea, and pest-resistant vegetable seeds, designed to maintain yields under harsh conditions.

Established in 2015, LCIC operates Ghana’s first dedicated seed business facility, Legacy Square, in Otareso, Akuapem North Municipality, marking a pioneering effort in both Ghana and the broader West African region.

The Global Business Climate Resilience Awards recognise initiatives that strengthen resilience across communities, ecosystems, and economies through strategic business actions. The awards also encourage collaboration among organizations, governments, and the private sector to advance sustainable resilience practices.

Dr. Azinu noted that the award validates LCIC’s mission to address climate challenges through agricultural innovation: “This recognition confirms our profound commitment to helping solve climate problems and challenges.”

The accolade positions Ghana as a regional leader in agricultural innovation for climate adaptation and underscores the importance of investing in local research and seed systems to ensure food security amid climate change.
