CAF CC: Karim Zito left surprised by Kotoko defence after narrow win over Kwara United

Asante Kotoko coach Abdul Karim Zito has admitted he was shocked by his defenders’ performance in their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round clash against Kwara United.

The Porcupine Warriors secured a 4-3 victory over the Nigerian side in a thrilling first-leg encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, but Zito was left unimpressed with his backline.

“Well, I was also surprised by the goals we conceded, just as you were. If you were in my dressing room today, I would applaud the attackers and then tell the defenders they are surprising me,” he said.

Zito explained that inexperience may have contributed to the defensive lapses, as some of his players were making their continental debut.

“This is the first time some of them are playing in this type of competition. It’s not easy, but I’ve seen my mistakes and I have to correct them before we go to Nigeria,” he added.

Kotoko will travel to Abuja for the decisive return leg against Kwara United at the M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium on Sunday, September 28.
