Kotoko captain Samba O’Neil ready for Kwara United test

Asante Kotoko captain Samba O’Neil has acknowledged the pressure on the team but says they are prepared to deliver in their CAF Confederation Cup opener against Nigeria’s Kwara United.

The FA Cup champions will host the first-leg tie on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off set for 15:00 GMT.

For many players in Kotoko’s squad, this will be their first experience on the continental stage, but O’Neil believes the challenge will serve as motivation rather than a burden.

“My mentality, as you know, is always to be ready, and it’s another opportunity for me to make things different,” he told the club’s media.

“We are confident and training very hard for this opportunity. We know most of us, it’s our first time to play in this kind of competition, so we have to go all out to make a name.”

The skipper stressed that handling pressure is part of representing the Porcupine Warriors.

“When you play for a big club like Kotoko, you have to know that everything you do, they will expect you to win. So whether you play well or badly, you have to win.

“The pressure will always be there, but we have to keep winning to make the fans happy,” he added.
