Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci has once again etched her name in the Guinness World Records, this time with a dish at the heart of Africa’s fiercest culinary rivalry: jollof rice.
On Friday, in Victoria Island, Lagos, Hilda teamed up with Gino Nigeria to serve the largest portion of Nigerian-style jollof rice ever recorded, weighing an astonishing 8,780 kilograms—over 19,000 pounds.
The record-breaking attempt turned into a festival, with thousands of people flocking to the venue, music performances energizing the crowd, and chants of “Hilda, we want jollof” echoing throughout.
It took nine hours of intense cooking, powered by more than a ton of gas, to prepare over 16,600 plates of rice, made with basmati rice, meat, rich spice mixes, and the kind of patience only a record-breaker could muster.
For Hilda, whose real name is Hilda Bassey, this is her second Guinness World Record. She first captured global attention in 2023 with a 93-hour cooking marathon, an effort that not only secured her a place in the record books but also inspired a wave of record attempts across Africa.
