2025/26 GHPL MD1 Wrap: GoldStars off to winning start as Kotoko end Chelsea woes

Heart of Lions

The opening weekend of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season delivered plenty of drama across the country’s football centres.

On Friday night, giants Hearts of Oak were frustrated at the Accra Sports Stadium, settling for a goalless draw against newly promoted Hohoe United, who finished the game with ten men.

Saturday’s spotlight fell on Asante Kotoko, who finally ended a 15-year winless run against Berekum Chelsea. Albert Amoah struck in the 80th minute at the Golden City Park to hand the Porcupine Warriors a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Defending champions Bibiani GoldStars began their title defence on a winning note, edging Bechem United 2-1 at the Dun’s Park. Kumi Attah’s brace proved decisive despite Darlvin Yeboah’s equaliser for the visitors.

Sunday’s fixtures produced more thrills. At the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, Nations FC came from behind to defeat Swedru All Blacks 2-1. Kweku Baffoe gave the returnees an early lead, but second-half goals from Samuel Tetteh and Emmanuel Annor turned the game in favour of the hosts.

Elsewhere, Basake Holy Stars were held to a goalless stalemate by fellow newcomers Eleven Wonders at the Nana Agyemang Badu Park, while Heart of Lions edged Dreams FC 1-0 in Kpando thanks to Ebenezer Abban’s 26th-minute penalty.

There was an upset in Dormaa, where Karela United stunned Aduana FC 1-0 at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, courtesy of Malik Abubakar’s early strike.

At the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex, Vision FC, reduced to ten men, battled to a resilient goalless draw against FC Samartex.

In Sunyani, Young Apostles endured a disappointing start to life in the top flight, falling 2-0 at home to Medeama SC. Emmanuel Owusu and Paul Yeboah were on target for the Yellow and Mauve.
