39 Nigerians arrested in sex trafficking sting which uncovered horrific abuses

A major police operation in the Upper Denkyira West District has uncovered a disturbing human trafficking and exploitation ring, resulting in the arrest of 39 individuals for alleged prostitution and drug-related offences.

The Central North Regional Police Command, acting on intelligence, stormed a location in Nipanekro near Subin, where they uncovered what authorities described as a “modern-day slavery network.”

Out of the 39 arrested, 33 were young Nigerian women between the ages of 16 and 25, who police say were trafficked and forced into prostitution. The remaining six suspects, all men, are alleged to have been involved in the drug trade that supported the operation.

Speaking at a media briefing, the Central North Regional Police Commander, ACP Abraham Acquaye, revealed the appalling conditions under which the women were kept. He explained that they have since been classified not as suspects, but as “victims of circumstance.” The victims will be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for repatriation to Nigeria.

In heartbreaking testimonies shared with Adom News’ Alfred Amoh, the women recounted severe abuse at the hands of their alleged ring leader, a woman identified as “Mama Rich.”

They revealed that they were forced to meet strict daily revenue targets—GH¢1,000 on Mondays and GH¢500 on other days. Failure to meet these targets reportedly resulted in grotesque punishments, including being forced to eat the faeces of their boss.

The victims further disclosed that they were subjected to terrifying rituals, including being made to swear naked at a shrine. This ritual, they said, was designed to trap them psychologically, with threats of madness if they ever attempted to escape.

According to police estimates, each victim was coerced into sleeping with up to 20 men a day in order to meet the imposed financial quotas.

Meanwhile, the six male suspects remain in police custody and are being investigated for their alleged role in facilitating the exploitation and drug trade.

Police say the raid underscores the cruel realities of human trafficking, where victims are controlled not only through physical abuse and financial exploitation but also through psychological and spiritual manipulation.
