Enoch Afoakwa, the lawyer for Percival Kofi Akpaloo, founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has stated that some of the alleged offences mentioned by the Deputy Attorney General (DAG) are “news to him.”
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Afoakwa said he was present throughout the cautioning of his client at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
“Taking his caution statements, I was there throughout. There is no material time that my client was writing his statements when I was not around,” he said.
He explained that Akpaloo was cautioned on three offences: defrauding by false pretenses, forgery, and money laundering.
“So far as the other offenses mentioned by the DAG have been made public, it is news to me,” he added.
Regarding bail, Afoakwa described the conditions as “too huge” and questioned both the bail amount and sureties required.
“The bail condition is not easy to meet, but we are working assiduously to ensure that the conditions are met and that my client’s liberty and rights are restored and not trampled upon,” he said.
Afoakwa also praised the professionalism of the officers handling the case.
“EOCO officers have been very professional with him, and my client is in good spirit. I am taking it calm, and it has also been an introspective moment for him,” he noted.
He added that while Akpaloo is still at EOCO despite being granted bail, they are hopeful the processes will be completed soon.
“All things being equal, if we are unable to finish the procedures today, we hope to complete them early and have him released,” Afoakwa said.
The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed that Akpaloo is under active investigation for alleged financial misconduct. Arrested by EOCO on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in Kumasi, Akpaloo faces allegations including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, dissipation of public funds, and money laundering.
Police bail was granted at GH¢10 million with two sureties, though Justice Srem-Sai explained on Facebook on Friday, September 5, that the conditions were yet to be justified.
