Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has petitioned the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL) to immediately restore water to the Municipality following a disruption that has lasted for more than two weeks.
In a letter dated August 20, 2025, Mr. Afenyo-Markin described the situation as one that has brought “unbearable hardship” to the municipality’s population of over 140,000.
He explained that the crisis has deeply affected every aspect of community life. Hospitals and clinics, he noted, are struggling to maintain basic hygiene, exposing residents to increased risks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and dysentery.
Educational institutions, from basic schools to tertiary facilities, have also been hit, with poor sanitation threatening the health and safety of students.
Families, in the absence of a steady supply, are being compelled to depend on irregular and expensive private water vendors, a burden that weighs most heavily on vulnerable groups including children and the elderly.
The impact on economic activity has been equally severe. Small businesses—particularly food vendors, hospitality operators, and artisans—are experiencing serious disruptions, leading to significant income losses and slowing down local commerce.
In his letter to the Managing Director of GWL, the Minority Leader called for immediate clarification on the reasons for the prolonged disruption and demanded a clear timeline for when residents can expect full restoration of water.
He stressed that the shortage has worsened sanitation challenges in Effutu and is now threatening the overall socio-economic stability of the municipality.
A copy of the letter has also been forwarded to the Minister of Works, Housing, and Water Resources for urgent attention.
