UENR commends President Mahama for establishing research fund

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for establishing a national research fund to support Ghanaian universities.

The initiative, the institution noted, is a timely intervention to ease the financial burdens that have long hampered research in the country.

Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, said the fund would empower universities to fulfill their core mandate of conducting research that addresses pressing societal issues and provides practical solutions.

He stressed the need for the fund to be structured in a way that guarantees accessibility and impact.

Professor Asare-Bediako made the remarks during the School of Natural Resources’ annual exhibition at the Sunyani main campus, held under the theme “Towards a Sustainable Planet; The Role of Natural Resources.”

Dean of the School of Natural Resources, Professor Daniel Akoto Sarfo, also underscored the importance of treating research as a national priority, in line with global best practices.

He appealed to civil society groups, NGOs, and individuals to support research activities, particularly in developing a reliable national database to guide policymaking and development efforts.

Both academics emphasized that sustained investment in research would be pivotal in tackling Ghana’s developmental challenges and positioning the nation for long-term growth.
