Appietus advocates masterclasses to empower up-and-coming music producers

Ghanaian music producer Appiah Dankwah, popularly known as Appietus, has called on experienced producers to organise masterclasses for emerging talents in the industry.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Appietus said many up-and-coming producers lack the fundamental skills needed to achieve high-quality sound in their work.

“My feeling is that we, the professionals, have to come together and help these guys. Maybe we can all decide to put together a masterclass to help these younger producers. People keep asking me, ‘Appiah, the song you did 20 years ago — whenever I hear it, the sound quality is good. Why isn’t mine like that?’ They keep buying equipment and software that doesn’t help them,” he said.

He stressed that without understanding the basics, younger producers will continue facing challenges.

“They need to understand what they’re doing first, but they don’t. So if we don’t help them… help means organising masterclasses. Of course, we will get paid. If the government steps in, the Kwame Yeboahs, Zapp Mallets, JMJ, Ubeatz — everyone — can share ideas and mentor these guys; they will get better.”

Appietus noted that while such training might be costly, collaboration among musicians’ unions could make it feasible.

Appietus is an award-winning Ghanaian music producer and sound engineer who has worked with some of Africa’s biggest music stars. Known for his signature “Appietus in the mix” tag, he has produced numerous hit songs across genres including hiplife, highlife, and gospel.
