Helicopter crash: Volta Regional Coordinating Council holds vigil in memory of victims

On the night of 10th August 2025, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), and residents of the Volta Region held a vigil in remembrance of the eight Ghanaians who, while on national assignment, tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash that occurred in Akrofu in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, 6th August 2025.

The event brought together members of the NDC and NPP, the clergy, various security personnel, traditional leaders, heads of decentralized departments, chief imams, and the general public.

Speaking at the program, Volta Regional Minister James Gunu described the eight persons as individuals who served the country diligently, with truth and humility.

Emphasizing Dr. Omane Boamah, he explained how he worked tirelessly to bring the NDC to power.

“Dr. Omane Boamah was our national election and IT director, with whom we worked closely during the last election. He brought his medical expertise and experience to bear on our national architecture and helped demystify the rumor that the NDC did not consolidate its election results in 2020.

He diagnosed our electoral architecture and found solutions, and in the 2024 election, we consolidated our results in a timely manner, and today, we are in power,” James Gunu stated.

He also described Murtala Mohammed as a man of integrity with the ‘Building Ghana Agenda’ at heart.

On his part, the Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mawutor Agbavitor, emphasized the deceased’s professionalism and discipline in their work before their tragic death, urging commitment towards resetting Ghana’s agenda.

“What we should take from their death is that we must commit to the progress and reset of this country,” Mawutor Agbavitor said.

He further condemned the act of galamsey and called for a stop to all galamsey activities in respect of their memories.

“One of the major issues confronting us as a country today is the menace of galamsey. It is sad that people must lose their lives in the fight against galamsey, yet irresponsible mining continues. If you have a conscience and think about anything good for this country and your children, and yet you still engage in irresponsible mining, it’s a shame to you,” Mawutor Agbavitor stated.

He seized the opportunity to entreat all Ghanaians to continue to pray for the deceased, their families, and the entire country, and also remember that discipline and commitment to duty are golden truths that must guide us.

The program ended with the laying of wreaths by the Volta Regional Minister, the chief imam, the NDC Volta Regional Chairman, the Direct Dean of the 66th Artillery Regiment (Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim), and representatives from the Ho Teaching Hospital.
