Vice President leads delegation to mourn helicopter crash victims

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has confirmed that Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is leading a government delegation to offer official condolences to the families of victims of the recent military helicopter crash.

Speaking to JoyNews at the Jubilee House, Mr. Iddrisu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, and Comrade Samuel Sarpong — three prominent officials who died in the crash.

“The Vice President is now leading a government delegation to formally convey the sad passing of our colleagues,” he said.

According to the Minister, two condolence teams have been constituted. The first, led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and the National Chairman of the NDC, is heading to Koforidua with support from the Army Commander. The second team will visit the remaining families to offer the government’s support.

“Do accept our sympathy and condolences. It is a very difficult moment for all of us,” Mr. Iddrisu added.

The tragic crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claiming eight lives — including Defence Minister Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed.

The officials were en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), a government initiative aimed at reforming Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.
