The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has expressed support for the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, over his firm stance on the high cost of DStv subscriptions in Ghana.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, August 3, Mr Opoku applauded Mr George’s commitment to defending the interests of Ghanaian consumers but cautioned against hasty regulatory actions that could backfire.

“I commend Sam George for standing up for consumers,” he stated, referring to the Minister’s recent pushback against MultiChoice, operators of DStv, over what he described as unjustifiably high subscription fees in Ghana.

Mr Opoku highlighted the pricing disparity across African countries, noting that Ghanaian subscribers pay nearly three times more than their Nigerian counterparts for the same service.

While backing the call for pricing fairness, he urged against immediate punitive measures such as revoking MultiChoice’s operating license, warning that such a move could negatively impact households, hospitality businesses, and other users who depend on the service for entertainment and income.

“We must engage carefully,” he advised. “Heavy-handed action could hurt the very people we aim to protect.”

He called for strategic dialogue with MultiChoice to achieve fair, regionally aligned pricing through negotiation rather than threats.

“We need constructive engagement with MultiChoice that delivers genuine price reductions, not excuses,” he concluded.
