Private legal practitioner Raymond Bidema has emphasised the need for caution and proper context in the ongoing alleged rape case involving Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, Mr. Bidema explained that the burden of proof lies with the prosecution.
“In such matters, the law requires the prosecution to establish beyond reasonable doubt that there was penetration—whether with or without consent. Only then can liability be determined,” he said.
According to him, it is not unusual for top footballers to face such allegations at key points in their careers.
He cited examples involving global icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé, who were accused of rape but later acquitted.
“We’ve seen cases where players, at the height of their careers, were accused of such crimes, only for the courts to eventually clear them. This is why it’s important to allow due process to take its course,” he added.
Mr. Bidema, however, expressed concern about the timing of the allegations.
“What kept running through my mind was why, when he was at Arsenal, such issues didn’t arise. It is only now, as he prepares to leave the club, that he is facing this case,” he remarked.
The lawyer warned that the outcome of the trial could have serious consequences for Partey.
“If convicted, he risks imprisonment, a fine, and disciplinary sanctions under football’s code of ethics. This could derail his career and tarnish his legacy,” he noted.
Despite the controversy, Mr. Bidema highlighted the affection many Ghanaians have for the midfielder.
“As a nation, we love Thomas Partey, and we only pray that he is not found guilty. This is an issue of great importance to all football fans, and we hope he will be exonerated.”
In mid-2025, reports emerged that the 32-year-old was facing rape allegations in the UK. While details remain before the court, the case has drawn global attention due to Partey’s high-profile status.
For the midfielder, the legal battle could determine not just his personal reputation but also the future of his football career.
