The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun investigations into an alleged assault by some of its personnel on a JoyNews journalist, Carlos Calony, and an eyewitness near a demolition site on the Spintex Road in Accra.
According to GAF, the probe seeks to establish the facts behind what it described as “inappropriate conduct” on Wednesday, July 30.
This was contained in a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations at GAF Headquarters, Burma Camp.
The release, signed by Captain V. A. Arhin of the Ghana Navy, Acting Director General of Public Relations, assured that the process would be thorough, adding that “those found culpable will be dealt with accordingly.”
Mr. Calony was detained by National Security operatives while covering the aftermath of the demolition of a warehouse belonging to businessman Daniel McCkorley under construction.
The reasons for Mr. Calony’s detention remain unclear, sparking criticism from press freedom advocates and civil society groups who have demanded accountability.
In a related development, the government has condemned the actions of the soldiers and security personnel, describing them as “utterly unacceptable.”
The President has instructed both the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to ensure a full investigation is conducted and that disciplinary and punitive measures are applied without delay.
