Forestry Commission raises alarm over illegal sawmills in Ahafo Region

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, has expressed serious concern over rising illegal activities by sawmill companies in the Ahafo Region, warning that these practices are posing a significant threat to the area’s forest reserves.

During a visit to some sawmills in Mim, Mr. Kotoko told Adom News that several companies are engaged in unlawful operations, including the purchase of stolen logs, which are often sold at cheaper prices than legally obtained timber.

He further revealed that some operators are buying immature logs — a practice he described as a blatant violation of forestry regulations.

“These illegal practices by sawmill owners are fast depleting the forest reserves in this region,” he stated.

To address the issue, Mr. Kotoko said the Commission will intensify public education campaigns to ensure that operators understand the laws governing the sector.

“From my interactions, it appears many are unaware that these practices are illegal and could lead to the closure of their companies,” he explained.

He stressed that after the educational phase, the Commission will launch unannounced operations to clamp down on all companies engaged in such unlawful activities.
