Renowned music executive and former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has revealed that the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba began his musical career as a professional chorister in church.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Okraku-Mantey highlighted the singer’s strong musical foundation, attributing his artistry to early training in church choirs.
“Lumba started as a chorister, and those people are really taught music. That was the foundation of his greatness,” he said.
He added that the highlife icon survived an accident in his youth, after which he recorded a song in gratitude to God.
“Sometimes, highlife musicians sing better than gospel musicians — and Lumba is proof of that,” he stated.
Daddy Lumba passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra. He was 60.
