Alice Kusi delighted as Black Queens clinch bronze medal at 2024 WAFCON

Black Queens forward Alice Kusi has expressed her delight after helping Ghana secure a bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking the country’s first podium finish in eight years.

Ghana edged past South Africa 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time during Friday’s third-place playoff.

South Africa, the reigning champions, opened the scoring late in the first half when Nonhlanhla Mthandi capitalized on a goalkeeping error by Cynthia Konlan.

But the Queens came out stronger in the second half and found the equalizer in the 68th minute, with Kusi calmly finishing off a cross from Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah.

“I’m happy we didn’t go home empty-handed. We couldn’t reach the final, but we’re going home with something,” said Kusi.

“I’m really excited to be the woman of the match,” she added.

The bronze marks Ghana’s first medal at the WAFCON since 2016, signaling a resurgence under head coach Kim Björkegren.
