Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren believes Ghana’s women’s national team has firmly established itself among Africa’s elite following their bronze medal finish at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Queens edged South Africa 4-3 on penalties in Friday night’s third-place playoff at the Stade Larbi Zaouli, marking their first podium finish at the tournament since 2016.

Despite a slow start to the campaign, with a loss to South Africa and a draw against Mali, Ghana bounced back with a commanding victory over Tanzania to advance from the group stage.

They then edged past Algeria in the quarterfinals via penalties, but were eliminated by hosts Morocco in a dramatic shootout during the semifinals.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, Björkegren praised his players’ resilience and overall performance.

“I think overall we have made a great tournament,” the Swiss trainer said. “We have shown that we are one of the best teams in Africa,” he added.

In Friday’s bronze medal clash, Ghana held their nerve in the shootout despite Chantelle Boye-Hlorkqh missing her kick. South Africa faltered twice from the spot, handing the Queens a deserved third-place finish.
