Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says he is confident Ghana’s women’s national team is heading in the right direction following their third-place finish at the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Ghana clinched the bronze medal on Friday night after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over reigning champions South Africa, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Stade Larbi Zaouli.
Reflecting on the achievement, Bjorkegren expressed pride in the team’s progress, especially considering their challenging start to the tournament.
“It’s huge. It’s going in the right direction,” Bjorkegren said after the game.
“We are going to look at the local market, some of the young players. In this tournament, I think we had 20 of 24 players who played in their first AFCON. We need to give them time.”
“I’m really excited for the future, and I have to keep working hard with the coaching team.”
The bronze medal marks Ghana’s best finish at the continental tournament since 2016, offering renewed hope for the team’s resurgence on the African stage.
