A man believed to have stolen a vehicle was brutally assaulted by a mob at Awutu Bereku in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The suspect, identified as Ekow Abekah, a taxi driver from Gomoa Fetteh, is currently receiving treatment at the Awutu Bereku Health Centre.
According to Isaac Arhin, a close friend of the car owner who spoke to Adom News, the incident occurred when the vehicle, with registration number GG 2658–20, was briefly parked by the roadside.
The owner had stepped aside to conduct a Mobile Money transaction, while Mr. Arhin went to buy food. Believing they would return quickly, they left the key in the ignition.
In a surprising twist, Ekow—described by some as mentally unstable—allegedly jumped into the vehicle and sped off.
The incident triggered a pursuit by motor riders from Gomoa Ojobi, who eventually caught up with the suspect between Awutu Bereku and Akoti. He was dragged out of the car and severely beaten by the crowd. Eyewitnesses claimed the suspect defecated on himself during the assault.
Mr. Arhin added that the windscreen and boot of the car were damaged during the chase.
The suspect was later rescued by police in the area and taken to the Awutu Bereku Health Centre for medical care.
Some residents have condemned the mob action, insisting that Ekow is well-known in the Gomoa Fetteh community and may not have intended to steal the vehicle.
