2024 WAFCON: Old Tafo MP credits NPP for Black Queens’ performance

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has attributed the Black Queens’ impressive run at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to what he calls the solid groundwork laid by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Black Queens, after a shaky start to the tournament, made history by reaching the semifinals for the first time in nine years. Their progress was sealed with a tense penalty shootout victory over Algeria.

Speaking on the team’s success, Assafuah, who serves as the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, said the NPP deserves recognition for policies introduced to rejuvenate women’s football in Ghana.

“Beyond the celebration of this victory lies the story of resilience and long-term investments and sustained commitment, particularly in the often underappreciated area of women’s football. While recent support must be acknowledged, this achievement is undeniably built on the foundation laid by the previous New Patriotic Party’s government,” he stated.

He further highlighted the NPP’s efforts to prioritise women’s sports, noting, “We took deliberate steps to reposition women’s sports as a national priority. It was under the leadership of the NPP that we witnessed the revamping of the women’s league through structured funding and logistical backing.”

Ghana will face host nation Morocco in the semifinals later today at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. Kick-off is set for 19:00 GMT.
