Presidential jet still grounded due to severe corrosion – Defence Minister

Minister for Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has disclosed that Ghana’s presidential jet remains grounded due to extensive corrosion, with no definite timeline for its return.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah said the Falcon aircraft has yet to return from maintenance and criticised repeated missed delivery deadlines.

“It is sad to note that for some time now, whenever the aircraft goes for either maintenance or repair… it has not returned. We’ve been given multiple dates which didn’t materialise,” he said.

“This time, we are hopeful, but I prefer not to announce the latest date.”

Dr. Boamah described the damage to the jet as significant, citing reports from independent assessors.

“The truth is, it is heavily corroded. This isn’t just from the Air Force but confirmed by third-party experts,” he revealed.

He, however, cautioned against using the jet’s unavailability as a reason for extravagant spending on private charters.

“That does not justify persistently hiring luxurious aircraft. Absolutely not,” he stressed.

The Minister assured Ghanaians that the government is reviewing the air and naval assets of the Armed Forces as part of a broader defence strategy, but immediate efforts are focused on restoring the Falcon jet to a serviceable state.
