GNAT President urges legal framework to safeguard role of PTA in education

President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Isaac Owusu, is urging Parliament to pass legislation to protect the renewed role of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in Ghana’s basic and secondary schools.

Speaking at the opening of the “Teaching Together” workshop in Abankro, organized in collaboration with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, Mr. Owusu emphasised that PTAs are crucial partners in school management and community-driven education.

He noted that GNAT has consistently advocated for the return of PTAs and wants their role formally safeguarded through law to prevent future disruptions.

“Restoring PTAs gives ownership of schools back to local communities,” he said, warning that any reversal would undermine inclusive participation in the education system.

The workshop brought together educators from the Northern, Bono, Ahafo, and Upper West regions to share insights and build skills for better classroom delivery.

Mr. Owusu also used the platform to call on the Finance Ministry to increase budgetary support for education.

He highlighted ongoing challenges faced by teachers, including inadequate infrastructure, limited teaching resources, and delayed allowances, all of which affect morale and quality education delivery.
