SEC rolls out ‘Time With The SEC’ campaign in Volta Region

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Ghana has extended its regional investor education campaign, Time With The SEC, to the Volta Region—marking a strategic step toward strengthening public understanding of the capital market across the country.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including local investors, entrepreneurs, capital market operators, government officials, and selected schools in the region. A major highlight was an interactive forum, where attendees expressed concerns about market transparency, emerging investment risks, and the integration of the Volta Region into Ghana’s broader financial framework.

In an interview with Adom News’ Volta Regional Correspondent, Odehyeba Owusu Job, the Acting Director-General of SEC, Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, described the campaign as central to “ensuring investor protection” and reinforcing public trust in the market.

He explained that Time With The SEC is designed to help the public understand the capital and securities industry and the role of SEC in capital market development.
“Our job at the SEC is to make sure that when people save and invest their money in Ghana, they do so in a safe and fair environment. We want to protect your investments—and those of your families—from bad deals and scams,” he stated.

Dr. Avedzi added that the SEC works hard to maintain a strong and trustworthy financial market.
“We collaborate with other regulators and players in the financial sector to ensure stability. We also work with international organisations like the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), which is like the global police for financial markets. Being a part of IOSCO gives Ghana’s capital market an international stamp of approval for being safe and fair,” he explained.

With the Volta Region edition concluded, Dr. Avedzi revealed plans to extend the campaign to other regions, ensuring stakeholders across the country benefit from direct engagement and market education. Participants called for follow-up sessions to address region-specific needs—particularly in investor education, financial inclusion, and the development of local capital-raising platforms.

The Volta Region event followed similar sessions held in Accra and Takoradi, offering in-depth discussions and insights into capital market activities.

In his welcome address, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, applauded the government’s ongoing reforms in the financial sector.
“Today’s event is a testament to government’s efforts to equip all relevant stakeholders under its financial inclusion agenda,” he said.

He underscored the important role of the SEC in the government’s economic transformation drive.
“As mandated by the Securities Industry Act, 2016 (Act 929), the SEC is to regulate and promote the growth of an efficient, fair, and transparent securities market that protects investors and upholds market integrity,” Hon. Gunu noted.

He also praised the Ag. Director-General of SEC for his proactive leadership and efforts to demystify the Commission’s activities.
“I believe that if we had had this kind of leadership earlier, we wouldn’t have witnessed such a difficult period in our history, where many investment banks and other financial institutions collapsed under the watch of our regulators,” he said.

Also speaking to Adom News, the Deputy Volta Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Mariam Jemima Akua Adzroe, commended the SEC for bringing the campaign to the region.

She stated that the programme would help educate students about securities analysis and discourage them from engaging in immoral behaviours.
She further called for more such programmes to enhance students’ understanding of the financial world.
