Minister of Defence, Dr. Omane Boamah, has called for calm and peaceful conduct as the Electoral Commission (EC) holds a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
Touring some polling centres, Dr. Boamah cautioned against the repetition of violence similar to what occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019.
“This is a civil exercise, not a war. What we experienced at Ayawaso West Wuogon should never happen again. People should be able to exercise their franchise in peace,” he stated.
He assured that any incidents of violence or irregularities would be dealt with appropriately by the Ghana Police Service.
“Any challenges that arise will be addressed by the Police. Trust that they will act,” he added.
Dr. Boamah visited the constituency alongside the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, to assess the situation following chaos that broke out at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling centre in Odorkor.
Voting was temporarily suspended at the centre after a group of unidentified thugs stormed the premises in a pickup vehicle, clashing with voters and police officers. Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was reportedly assaulted during the melee.
The EC and security agencies have since taken steps to restore calm and continue the electoral process.
