Ablekuma North rerun comes off today

The Electoral Commission (EC) will conduct a rerun today, July 11, in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency, following disruptions during the December 2024 elections that prevented the collation of final results.

More than 6,000 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots in the keen contest between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn.

At a news conference on Thursday, the Deputy EC Chairperson in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, pledged the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent poll.

Dr. Asare also assured that the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Taskforce are prepared to provide adequate security.

The NPP has described the rerun as illegal and in contempt of court, stating that it would not participate.

However, an injunction application filed at the Accra High Court to halt the EC’s decision was dismissed on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Despite the party’s boycott, the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, has decided to take part in the election.

In an interview during a last-minute campaign, the former MP said her decision was motivated by a desire to defend her victory in the 2024 parliamentary election.

She expressed confidence that divine intervention would secure her a win.
