Crime scene

Residents of Kato near Berekum in the Bono Region have been plunged into grief and disbelief following a tragic incident in which a father fatally shot his daughter, injured his son, and subsequently took his own life.

The deceased, identified as Kwasi Gabriel, believed to be in his late 40s, reportedly shot and killed his 11-year-old daughter, Olivia Faakyewaa, and injured his 14-year-old son, Daniel Agyei, before committing suicide. The heartbreaking event occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

While the exact motive behind the act remains unclear, some residents who spoke to Adom News linked the incident to long-standing marital issues.

Preliminary police investigations suggest that Gabriel had been embroiled in a protracted marital dispute with his estranged wife, Sarah Yeboa, who currently lives in Dormaa Ahenkuro. Family sources revealed that the children had been living with their mother until two weeks ago, when Gabriel reportedly took custody under the pretense of enrolling them in a school in Berekum.

A chilling detail emerged that Gabriel allegedly instructed his son, Daniel, to write a letter to their mother, informing her of his decision to relocate the children to an undisclosed location. However, Daniel reportedly defied his father’s instructions.

Gabriel’s mother, Abena Mansah, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, revealing that both families were actively working to resolve the marital tensions before the horrific turn of events.

The Assembly Member for Kato Electoral Area, Ofori Darkwa, confirmed that police officers visited the scene and conveyed the bodies to the mortuary.

The remains of Kwasi Gabriel and Olivia Faakyewaa have been deposited at the Holy Family Hospital Morgue, while Daniel is currently receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds.

The devastating incident has left the Kato community in mourning, with many struggling to come to terms with the senseless loss of life.

Police authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
