Residents of three farming communities in the Asunafo South District of the Ahafo Region have raised alarm over the deteriorating state of a bridge that connects them to the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality in the Western North Region.
The bridge, which spans the River Asawine, is the only route linking the communities of Asawineso, Adwumam, and Asante Nkae to the neighbouring municipality.
However, the structure has now become a danger to lives and livelihoods, with residents describing it as a death trap.
In interviews with Adom News, the residents expressed frustration and fear as the bridge continues to pose a serious risk.
According to them, the weakened structure hampers movement—especially during emergencies—making it difficult for people to access medical care, schools, markets, and transport routes to deliver their farm produce.
“This bridge connects us to Bibiani where we do business and access hospitals. But its current condition is terrible. We fear it may collapse any moment. We can’t continue risking our lives,” one distressed resident said.
Residents noted that the bridge’s condition worsens during the rainy season, cutting off communities entirely and forcing them to wade through dangerous paths to cross the river.
They have, therefore, appealed to their Member of Parliament, Eric Opoku, and the District Chief Executive, Benjamin Yinkah, to intervene urgently and ensure the construction of a permanent and safer bridge.
The residents insist that a lasting solution will not only improve movement but also boost socio-economic activities across the district and municipality.
