Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, says credible research findings have not linked the party’s 2024 electoral loss to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Akomea referenced a report by respected pollster Musah Dankwa, which he said identified economic hardship—not Dr. Bawumia’s leadership—as the primary reason for the NPP’s defeat.
“At the time we lost the elections, Bawumia was not the flagbearer or president. Musah Dankwa, one of the most credible researchers in the country, did not blame Bawumia,” he stated.
He also dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia’s religious background led to voter apathy, emphasizing that party members overwhelmingly endorsed him during the NPP’s presidential primaries.
“Claims that people didn’t vote for him because he is Muslim are baseless. He secured more votes than some Christian candidates in several regions,” Mr. Akomea noted.
He cautioned aspirants in the ongoing internal race to be measured in their campaign messaging, warning against divisive narratives that could undermine party unity.
Mr. Akomea reiterated that the NPP remains a national and inclusive party, not defined by ethnicity or religion, and is well-positioned to reclaim power in 2028.
