Continue the fight against exam malpractice – Adutwum to government

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has called on the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to sustain and strengthen the fight against examination malpractice, which he says was a key focus under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Adutwum said his only request of the new government is to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s education system by continuing reforms that reduce cheating in national exams.

“We tried to fight against it, and if the NDC government continues, I would be so glad,” he said.

“When we were in power, we tackled BECE leakages and introduced serialization at the WASSCE level where different exam centres received different question sets.”

He urged the NDC to take the efforts a step further by implementing randomized question arrangements within the same exam hall to eliminate cheating completely.

Dr. Adutwum emphasized that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) must be empowered to invest in whatever resources are necessary to eliminate malpractice.

“I want the NDC to take it a step further: all the questions should be arranged differently even within the same examination hall. This way, malpractice can be completely eliminated. If this government is willing to stop exam malpractice, they should serialize the questions, and WAEC should ensure that any expenditure needed to secure this process is invested. Once that is done, we can improve education,” he stated.
