In response to the recent disturbances at Nkwanta Senior High School (SHS) over the seizure of mobile phones, the Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, together with the Oti Regional Coordinating Council (RESEC), has convened a meeting with the school’s teaching staff to help end the students’ rioting.
The purpose of the gathering was to foster dialogue and find a resolution to the tensions that had arisen between the students and the school authorities.
The unrest began after the school enforced a strict policy prohibiting the use of mobile phones on campus, citing concerns about distractions and the impact on academic performance.
This decision faced significant backlash from students, leading to protests and unrest within the school community.
Headmaster of Nkwanta Senior High School, Solomon Sarpong Bagmanan, expressed concern over how the disturbances were affecting the learning environment and the overall well-being of students.
He lamented the declining level of discipline within the school and appealed to the Regional Minister to implement strict measures to prevent further incidents.
During the meeting, Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong commended the teachers for their dedication and commitment to maintaining discipline and academic excellence at Nkwanta SHS.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration among the school administration, teachers, and parents to help students understand the rationale behind the mobile phone policy.
The Minister also acknowledged the challenges educators face in enforcing such rules and pledged his support in their efforts.
He engaged the school community, advising students to behave well in order to secure a brighter future.
Jacquelinda Attabra, the Oti Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), who was also present at the meeting, highlighted the need for clear communication between school authorities and students.
She urged teachers to engage students in discussions about the implications of mobile phone usage on their studies and personal development.
On behalf of the school, she expressed a willingness to work closely with the Minister and GES to create a conducive learning environment that balances discipline with students’ needs.
She noted that the Oti Regional Minister’s proactive approach is expected to pave the way for a more harmonious relationship within the school community, ultimately benefiting students’ educational experiences.
