Tipper truck overturns on Accra-Tema Motorway

-

The vital Accra-Tema Motorway was plunged into chaos on Monday morning after a tipper truck laden with construction stones overturned, spilling debris across multiple lanes.

The incident, which occurred between the 18 Junction and 1st Signboard area, triggered a colossal gridlock that trapped thousands of commuters for over two hours.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as total paralysis. The truck, reportedly carrying 20 to 25 tons of aggregate, flipped sideways and scattered its heavy load across a significant stretch of the road, rendering two lanes impassable.

As of 10 a.m., there was no visible presence of emergency responders or police at the crash site, further worsening the situation.

Motorists, both private and commercial, expressed frustration at the lack of a swift official response, as traffic came to a complete standstill in both directions.

Commuters traveling between Accra and Tema faced major delays, disrupting business operations, school runs, and daily routines.

Experts warn that the economic cost of such prolonged traffic congestion—measured in lost productivity and fuel consumption—could run into hundreds of thousands of Ghana Cedis per hour on a road that handles over 50,000 vehicles daily.
