Residents of Wajah-Akura, a farming community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, are calling for urgent intervention to address the lack of electricity and mobile network connectivity, which they say has stifled development and daily life.

Due to the absence of reliable mobile signal, residents are forced to hang their phones on trees in desperate attempts to receive a signal.

During a visit to the community, Adom News’ Obrempongba K. Owusu observed that the lack of electricity and communication services has not only disrupted routine activities but has also denied the community access to education and economic opportunities.

Residents lamented the difficulty in accessing basic services and information, which they say has left them cut off from the rest of the country.

“The situation is affecting our children’s education. Teachers don’t want to accept postings here because there’s no light or network,” one resident said.

The only basic school in the area is struggling to operate effectively, as the lack of amenities discourages teachers from staying and teaching in the community.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, acknowledged the challenges and said efforts are underway to address them.

He indicated that seventeen communities, including Wajah-Akura, had been selected under a rural electrification project initiated during President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

Mr. Awal said although the project was stalled under the current government, plans are in place to resume it to help connect underserved communities to the national grid.

He emphasized that addressing the infrastructure gap is not just about improving living conditions but about empowering communities that have been left behind.
