Ken Ashigbey calls for arrest of Amenfi East MP [Audio]

The Convener of the Anti-Galamsey Coalition, Ken Ashigbey, has called for the immediate arrest of Amenfi East Member of Parliament, Nicholas Amankwah, following reports that the MP pleaded on behalf of illegal miners operating in Wassa Japa within his constituency.

Environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor revealed that during a military-led operation targeting the galamsey enclave, Mr. Amankwah defended the illegal miners.

Reacting to the reports in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Ashigbey condemned the MP’s actions, saying they undermine efforts to combat illegal mining.

He cited Act 995, Section 99 (2b), urging authorities to take swift action against the lawmaker.

“Under Act 995, this MP who is encouraging people although he knows about the illegality and is doing nothing about it, he must be arrested. It breaks my heart that no action has been taken against these self-confessed criminals, and the MP is also defending them despite the devastation,” Dr. Ashigbey stated.

He stressed the urgent need for the government to intensify the fight against galamsey and bring it to an end.
