The popular Takoradi Masquerade Festival is set to receive a fresh design overhaul, thanks to the talents of Ohyewakomem, a rising costume design team based in the heart of the Western Region.
Led by the duo Esuman and Hannah Fosuaa, Ohyewakomem has been officially commissioned to design and produce the new costume styles for the 2024 edition of the Takoradi Masquerades, one of Ghana’s most colorful and culturally significant festivals.
While both team members bring passion to the project, focus has turned especially to Hannah Fosuaa, the group’s lead designer.
With five years of experience in sewing and costume design, Fosuaa has quickly emerged as a creative force in Takoradi’s cultural scene, known for fusing traditional Ghanaian aesthetics with bold, contemporary flair.
“This is more than just fashion… it’s about heritage and identity,” Hannah told local sources. “We want the 2024 masquerades to reflect the evolution of Takoradi culture while honoring our roots.”
The Takoradi Masquerade Festival, typically held during the Christmas season, is famous for its exuberant street parades, brass band music, and extravagant costumes.
Each year, hundreds of masqueraders don vibrant attire to dance through the streets in celebration—a tradition dating back several decades.
Ohyewakomem’s selection is a testament to a growing shift toward empowering local designers and injecting new energy into cherished cultural expressions.
Though still relatively new on the broader fashion scene, the team’s work has already been turning heads online and within the Takoradi creative community.
Sources close to the designers indicate that the new costumes will blend modern tailoring with classic masquerade themes. Designs are expected to be unveiled to the public closer to the festival season.
