The AfriKan Continental Union Consult (ACUC), a think tank on African good governance, is calling for the resignation of Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), following a viral video showing him handing out foreign currency.
The video, which has sparked widespread public disapproval, captures Mr. Gyamfi counting and giving an undisclosed amount of dollars to Madam Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a self-proclaimed evangelist.
Dr. Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg, CEO of ACUC, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that Mr. Gyamfi—who also serves as Communications Director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—must either resign or be dismissed by President John Dramani Mahama if the act of public misconduct is verified.
“This video is an affront to Ghana’s image and a stain on the Office of the President, especially when President Mahama has just launched a Code of Conduct for government officials,” Dr. Aziginaateeg said.
He described the incident as a test case for the president’s commitment to good governance. “He should resign because he has lost the moral high ground. The reset must begin with the right attitudes from those in power,” he stated.
Dr. Aziginaateeg also questioned the government’s credibility on matters of corruption, especially given that the currency involved was not even Ghanaian cedis, but foreign notes, and the act was carried out by the head of a key mineral institution.
He warned that failure to act decisively could cost the president his popularity. “If the president remains soft on this matter, he may become more disliked than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he warned.
He further advised that governments must clearly define their ideologies and properly prepare appointees before assuming office to avoid early failure.
Meanwhile, Mr. Gyamfi has apologised to Ghanaians and to the president, clarifying that the gesture was a personal act of kindness and not intended for public display.
“This was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and lifelong custom of lending a helping hand to people in need. I sincerely thought I was doing this act of kindness in private and never imagined it would go public,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“That is unfortunate and regrettable. I understand the uproar this has caused, particularly among comrades who are sincerely hurt. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views,” he added.
