Managing Director of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited has revealed that the road will be built with 8 grade-separated interchanges, 11 vehicle overpasses and 55 mainline bridges, alongside other safety-focused infrastructure along the corridor.
He gave the details at Monday’s handover of a 175.6-kilometre right-of-way cleared by the Ghana Armed Forces.
The 198.7-kilometre project will run from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, made up of 176 kilometres of newly built expressway and about 23 kilometres of upgraded connector roads at both ends.
The mainline will be a Class A highway with a three-lane dual carriageway on a 36-metre roadbed, designed for speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour, while connector roads will run as Class B roads with a 60 km/h limit.
Beyond the interchanges and bridges, the project will have nine at-grade intersections, roughly 200 reinforced concrete box culverts, four service areas for motorists, eight tolling points, one operating centre and two monitoring centres to track traffic and respond to incidents.
There will also be a fire service and ambulance station, three maintenance depots, and road safety and electromechanical systems to support an intelligent transport network.
The completed road, according to the Managing Director, is expected to shorten the Accra-Kumasi distance by about 50 kilometres, cut journey times by half and reduce transport costs by roughly 40%.
“When completed, this road will provide safer and more reliable transport and reduce the pressure on the N6,” he added.
