A 7-year-old boy has died after falling into a water-filled manhole at Abuom Redtop, near the West Hills Mall in Accra.
According to eyewitnesses, the child was playing in the area when he accidentally fell into the uncovered pit, which had been left filled with muddy water.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were called to the scene and retrieved the body after draining the water.
The pit, an abandoned galamsey site, has reportedly been left open for months despite repeated warnings about the danger it poses to the community.
Fire officer Adomba Kojo Poku reported that a similar incident occurred barely a month ago, claiming the life of another 7-year-old boy.
They expressed frustration over what they described as negligence and inaction on the part of the property owner and local authorities.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at a nearby morgue, while police have begun investigations into the incident.
