406 graduate from Peki College of Education; chief urges teachers to be role models

At a time when Ghana’s education system faces growing pressure to adapt to global changes, the Paramount Chief of the Peki Traditional Area, Deiga Kwadzo Dei, has urged newly graduated teachers of the Peki College of Education to uphold discipline and serve as role models for the next generation.

Speaking at the College’s 17th Congregation Ceremony, which saw 406 students graduate, the Paramount Chief cautioned the teachers against drug abuse and alcohol consumption, emphasizing that their personal conduct can either inspire or derail the future of their pupils.

“Teachers must be disciplined, drug-free, and exemplary in their conduct because they are shaping the future of our children and this nation,” he said.

The Principal of the College, Dr. Ebenezer Appah Bonney, also stressed the urgent need for government support to sustain quality teacher training.

He called on the Ministry of Education to prioritize the construction of well-designed halls of residence with modern kitchen facilities, as well as additional lecture rooms to reduce overcrowding.

Meanwhile, the College has made significant strides in addressing some of its own challenges. Through internally generated funds, management has commissioned a clinic, refurbished the ICT Centre, established a sachet water factory, and completed a 250-capacity dormitory funded by GETFund. Dr. Bonney explained that these initiatives will enhance healthcare, boost internal revenue, and ease accommodation difficulties.

This year’s congregation, themed “Colleges Sustaining Quality Teacher Education in a Changing World,” recorded impressive academic results: 64 graduates (16%) attained First-Class Honours, 294 (72%) earned Second-Class Upper Division, and 48 (12%) received Second-Class Lower Division.
