The Eastern Regional Police Command has arraigned 34 suspects, including six chiefs, in connection with a shooting incident at Ahwerase that left one person dead and three others injured during a traditional ritual to lift the ban on noise-making ahead of the Odwira Festival.
According to a statement signed by Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, Head of Public Affairs for the Eastern Region, the suspects were charged with rioting with offensive weapons and causing unlawful harm.
The deceased, identified as Isaac Nana Kwasi, was pronounced dead following the clash, while the injured are receiving treatment at the Aburi KOM Presbyterian Hospital. The body of the deceased has been deposited for autopsy.
Police retrieved two firearms, a Umarex Pistol (No. MP160407589) and a Cyborg Magnum Force Pump Action gun (No. 602-H25YT-516), along with four live and four spent cartridges at the scene.
Superintendent Tetteh noted that the situation in Ahwerase is currently calm, adding that police are closely monitoring developments to maintain order.
He assured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure peace and safety before, during, and after the Odwira Festival.
