Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has urged the Black Stars to exact revenge on Comoros when the two sides meet on Sunday in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana, who need just a point to secure qualification for the World Cup, will be aiming to end their poor run against Comoros, having lost their last two meetings.
The Black Stars were eliminated from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after a 3-2 defeat to the island nation, before falling 1-0 again in Moroni during the second round of the ongoing qualifiers.
Despite Ghana’s near-certain qualification, Vanderpuye insists the team must approach the game with pride and purpose.
“Against Comoros, we have qualified already. Even if we lose, Madagascar would need to win by eight goals to overtake us, which is practically impossible,” he told Citi Newsroom.
“But we should still win against Comoros because of the painful defeat we suffered in the past. We have to prove to them that we are Ghana,” he added.
Kick-off is set for 19:00 GMT at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars, who have previously appeared at the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 World Cups in Germany, South Africa, Brazil, and Qatar, respectively, are eager to seal their fifth appearance on football’s grandest stage.
