2026 WCQ: Thomas Partey doubtful for Ghana v Mali game on Monday

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is facing a race against time to be fit for the Black Stars’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Mali on Monday, September 8.

The Villarreal man was absent from Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Chad in N’Djamena on Thursday after falling ill.

According to a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement, Partey has yet to train with the team since their return to Accra on Friday.

The GFA further confirmed that Ibrahim Sulemana suffered a knee injury during the team’s final training session in Chad, while Elisha Owusu will miss the Mali clash due to suspension after picking up an accumulation of yellow cards.

In response to the setbacks, coach Otto Addo has handed a late call-up to Real Oviedo midfielder Kwasi Sibo.

The 26-year-old, who has featured in all three of his club’s Segunda División matches this season, is expected to boost Ghana’s midfield options.

Meanwhile, Joseph Paintsil and Alexander Djiku, who missed the Chad encounter, have rejoined the squad and are available for selection.

Despite the setback against Chad, Ghana remain top of Group I with 16 points.

With three games left to play, the Black Stars must avoid dropping points if they are to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
