2026 WCQ: Otto Addo rues missed chances after Ghana held by Chad

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has stressed the need for sharper finishing after Ghana were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Group I clash, staged at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno in N’Djamena on Thursday, saw Ghana take control early through Jordan Ayew’s 17th-minute strike.

However, the four-time African champions squandered several opportunities to extend their lead, and their wastefulness proved costly when Celestine Ecua struck in the 88th minute to snatch a point for the hosts.

Addo, visibly frustrated after the match, admitted his side’s inefficiency in front of goal undermined what could have been a comfortable win.

“I can’t say we played excellently or we played well because it was a draw. The result is everything we had a lot of corners, we did nothing out of that,” he said.

“We had a lot of shots, attempts on goal, we had a lot of ball possession, and normally we have to win this game. This, in the end, surely, is not good enough, and we have to improve, especially on our execution,” Addo added.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to a high-stakes Matchday 8 fixture against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT.

Despite dropping points in N’Djamena, Ghana remain top of Group I with 16 points as the race for World Cup qualification intensifies.
