Former Ghana international Mohammed Polo has questioned the readiness of local players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, asserting that only Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare deserves a place in the Black Stars squad.

With Ghana set to compete in North America this summer, the four-time African champions have historically relied on overseas-based talent, a trend that appears set to continue.

Polo attributed this reliance to the declining standard of the domestic league.

“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” the AFCON winner told Connect FM.

“The quality of the Ghana Premier League has gone down drastically. I watched the Super Clash the other time and didn’t enjoy it because the players weren’t good enough.

“Despite the red card for Hearts of Oak in the game, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant, and it all came down to quality,” he added.

The Black Stars will begin their 2026 World Cup campaign in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Ghana will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, the team will reconvene in March for friendlies against Austria and Germany, followed by a final warm-up match against Mexico in May.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that the squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the competition.
