Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has expressed confidence that Ghana will produce a strong showing against England at the 2026 World Cup.
Ghana, four-time African champions, are set to make their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn into Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will face England in their second group match on June 23.
Speaking at the official launch of Ghana’s national team jersey in New York, Gyan highlighted England’s quality but emphasized that he expects a competitive encounter.
“We are playing against England, we are in the same group. You know, on paper, England, of course, is one of the best in the world right now,” Gyan said.
“You know, but people are optimistic about that game. To play against England. I’m not thinking about playing England; I just want Ghana to qualify from the group stage to go to the next stage of the competition, so we’ll see what happens. But Ghana against England is going to be a very, very good game,” he added.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before concluding group play against Croatia on June 27.
Gyan also recalled his memorable moment against England in 2011, when he scored a late equalizer in a 1-1 friendly after Andy Carroll had given the Three Lions the lead.
The Black Stars have regrouped ahead of international friendlies against Austria and Germany this week as they prepare for the World Cup.
