2026 WC: Best-performing local players must be included in Black Stars – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

-

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has backed calls for in-form players from the Ghana Premier League to be included in Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The campaign, backed by figures within the football community and in Parliament, seeks to ensure that top performers from the domestic league are not overlooked when Ghana heads to the global showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Momentum has grown since FIFA confirmed a $300 million compensation fund for clubs whose players participate in the tournament, a financial incentive many believe could be a lifeline for local teams.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Kwakye Ofosu described the proposal as sensible and rewarding.

“I agree. There’s a precedent. At the last World Cup, there were local players. Local players and local teams benefited, so I see no reason why we cannot repeat the same,” he said.

The Abura Aseibu-Kwamankese MP added that the expanded 26-man squad provides room to recognise standout performers from the domestic league.

“It’s a 26-man squad; not everybody gets to play. There are some who will never touch a football anyway. So why don’t we utilize the opportunity to select the best-performing local players?

“At the same time, our local clubs will also benefit from this package, so I think it’s a win-win for everyone. I support it fully,” he added.

The Black Stars will learn their group opponents when the World Cup draw is held on December 5.
