The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has expressed concerns about Ghana’s readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the dismissal of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

Addo, 50, was relieved of his duties after the national team suffered consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.

Speaking at the launch of the third edition of the Democracy Cup, Bagbin said he was surprised by the decision, noting that the current state of the team does not reflect Ghana’s footballing standards.

“You’re seeing what is happening with the national team; this cannot be Ghana. I was very, very surprised when I heard the coach was axed,” he said.

The Speaker also criticised tactical decisions in the team’s 2-1 loss to Germany, questioning the strategies employed.

“When you have a short striker in front, the first measure is the speed of the striker against the defenders, then you know how to spin the balls for that striker to pick. What happened yesterday [against Germany] is not coaching,” he added.

With less than three months to the World Cup, pressure is mounting on the Ghana Football Association to appoint a new head coach and restore stability. The Black Stars are scheduled to face Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2 in upcoming friendlies as part of their preparations.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, aiming to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.
